<p>What a heart-wrenching situation. They want to have a child using an embryo that will be screened to ensure that the baby&#8217;s blood will be compatible with their two-year-old. He has a terminal blood disease and needs blood from the new baby&#8217;s umbilical cord. This should trigger the boy&#8217;s own system to start producing the needed cells. </p>
<p>I can&#8217;t imagine being in that situation. I&#8217;m very open to having another child, but would I take these kinds of steps if one of my other two boys had such a disease? I&#8217;m not so sure I wouldn&#8217;t make the same choice to save the life of Peter or Lex. But the implications behind the concept are scary.</p>
