Very interesting article in the Scotsman this week: Scotsman.com – Couple win right to ‘designer baby’ in order to treat son

What a heart-wrenching situation. They want to have a child using an embryo that will be screened to ensure that the baby’s blood will be compatible with their two-year-old. He has a terminal blood disease and needs blood from the new baby’s umbilical cord. This should trigger the boy’s own system to start producing the needed cells.

I can’t imagine being in that situation. I’m very open to having another child, but would I take these kinds of steps if one of my other two boys had such a disease? I’m not so sure I wouldn’t make the same choice to save the life of Peter or Lex. But the implications behind the concept are scary.
